To answer the obvious question: why not Reach and those gorgeous skyboxes? Two reasons. 1) I wouldn’t touch that compressed-to-fuck Theater Mode with a ten-foot pole. 2) It’s often noted that Reach looks better in motion than those exported screenshots. This, I suspect, is because it’s using a tiling solution to render its high-quality screens, and is thus unable to capture certain valuable screen space effects. I could live with the second, so it’s a shame there’ll be a fix for neither. Tools and tricks: Custom Edition, Sky’s The Limit FOV trainer, developer console, debug camera, offline antialiasing.

“Magic America”

The antialiasing solution I’m using for these GTA IV pics means that I can – for screenshot purposes, at least – fully antialias anything. Once I’ve grabbed a scene at 2160p, I apply two antialias passes in Photoshop via a relatively simple filter, each time using a different colour threshold to attack different affected areas. Not only does it give a 1080p shot for even GTA IV almost perfect edges, but it means that the 2160p shot will be antialiased, too. Not as well, but it’ll work for the handful of folks who tell me they use >1080p displays. I never said it’d be interesting, though, did I.
