One of the more fatal misconceptions of current-gen development has been to replace programmers with middleware. The Last Remnant, Square Enix’s bid to hit all the major territories at once with a ‘multinational’ RPG, escaped with merely framerate problems and an aborted PS3 version. Still a superior Unreal game, it cuts far fewer corners in the mo-cap, texture and effects departments, wielding Epic’s engine with very eastern panache.
